Is Stainless Steel Jewelry Waterproof? Shower, Gym, Pool and Sea Explained

Short answer: yes. Jewelry built on 316L stainless steel is waterproof. You can shower in it, train in it and swim in it, and the steel underneath will not rust, go green or react to your sweat. That is the reason most men who wear a chain every day end up wearing steel.

The longer answer is about the finish on top of the steel, because that is the part that needs a little care. Below is what water, sweat, chlorine and salt actually do to a gold or silver-tone piece, what wears a finish down over the years, and the two minutes of care that keep it looking right.

What 316L stainless steel does in water

316L is a marine-grade, low-carbon stainless steel. The "L" means low carbon, and the alloy includes molybdenum, which is what gives it extra resistance to rust and corrosion. It is the same family of steel used on boat fittings and in places that stay wet for years.

In practical terms, water does nothing to it. Tap water, rain, sweat and a hot shower are not a problem for the base metal. It does not rust, it does not pit, and it does not react with your skin the way brass or copper does. That is why you do not get a green ring on your neck or wrist from steel.

Every piece we make starts from that 316L base. Gold pieces are 18K gold plated using PVD, and silver-tone pieces are rhodium plated. So when people ask "is stainless steel jewelry waterproof", the steel part of the answer is simple. The plating is where the details live.

Plating on steel vs plating on brass

Most affordable gold-tone jewelry is plated. What matters is what sits underneath.

A lot of cheaper jewelry is plated over brass or copper. When that plating thins, the base metal comes through, and brass and copper react with water and sweat. The piece discolors and can leave a green or dark mark on your skin. That is the "it turned my neck green" story most men have heard.

Plating on steel works differently. Where the finish thins from friction over time, what is underneath is stainless steel. It does not rust and it does not turn your skin green. So even an old, well-worn piece stays wearable.

The way the plating goes on also matters. PVD (physical vapor deposition) is a vacuum process that bonds the coating to the steel more durably than traditional electroplating. Rhodium on the silver-tone pieces gives a bright, hard surface. Neither finish is indestructible, but both are built for a piece you wear every day rather than one you save for weekends.

Shower, gym and sweat

This is the everyday question, and the answer is yes. You can shower with gold plated stainless steel jewelry. Soap and warm water do not damage 316L, and a normal shower is not what wears a PVD finish.

The gym is the same. Sweat is mostly water and salt, and steel handles it without reacting. A chain like the 3MM Rope chain can stay on through a session, a run and the shower after. The same goes for a cuff. The Creation of Adam Cuff V2 sits on the wrist through push-ups, washing your hands and doing the dishes, and the steel does not care.

What does wear a finish over time is friction, not water. A bracelet that rubs against a desk all day, a chain that rubs against another chain, a cuff that knocks against a watch. Those contacts slowly polish any surface, gold or not. Water is not the enemy here. Repeated rubbing is.

A few habits that help:

  • Put lotion, cologne and sunscreen on first, let them dry, then put your jewelry on.
  • If you lift heavy and a pendant swings into the bar, tuck it under your shirt or take it off for that set.
  • After a sweaty session, a quick rinse in the shower is enough.

Pool and sea

You can swim with it. Our jewelry care page says the same: the jewelry is waterproof and you can shower or go swimming with it. It also recommends keeping pieces clear of moisture and chemicals where you can, because any piece of jewelry can be damaged by poor wearing habits.

Chlorine and salt water are the two harshest everyday exposures for any plated finish. A swim does not ruin a piece. Hours a day in a chlorinated pool, every day, all summer, will be harder on the finish than anything else you do.

So the sensible approach for the pool and the beach:

  • Swimming in it is fine. Long, repeated soaks in chlorine or salt water are what you want to limit.
  • After the pool or the sea, rinse the piece in fresh water.
  • Dry it with a soft cloth before you put it away or carry on with your day.
  • Keep it away from pool chemicals, cleaning products and anything with bleach.

Do that and a beach holiday is not a reason to leave your chain at home.

Tarnish and fading: what actually happens

Does stainless steel jewelry tarnish? The steel itself does not. Tarnish is a reaction between a metal and air, moisture or chemicals, and 316L is made to resist exactly that. That is why our pieces are described as fade and tarnish resistant and made to wear every day.

Resistant is the honest word, and it is worth being clear about what it means. Plating is a surface finish. The places that get the most friction, like the edge of a cuff, the clasp on a chain or the links that rub against your collar, can pick up small scratches and scuffs over time. That is normal wear on any finish. Fading is different: if the gold finish fades or loses its shine, at any point, our Lifetime Guarantee replaces the piece.

What you should not see is a piece that turns dark, goes green or loses its color after a few showers. If that happens, it is not normal, and it is exactly what our Lifetime Guarantee is for.

A pendant like the Chip Tanzanite pendant works the same way. The pendant and chain are 316L steel with a gold or rhodium finish, and the stone is a Tanzanite-blue Cubic Zirconia. It takes the same care as everything else: wear it, rinse it after salt or chlorine, and wipe it dry.

A 2-minute care routine

You do not need special products. A soft cloth and mild soap do everything you need. This is the routine from our jewelry care page, kept simple:

  1. Dip a soft microfiber cloth in lukewarm water with a little mild soap.
  2. Wipe off dirt, sweat and fingerprints with soft pressure. Do not scrub.
  3. Rinse with fresh water if you have been in the pool or the sea.
  4. Pat it dry and let it sit for a few minutes before you put it away.
  5. Store it dry, ideally separate from other pieces so chains do not rub against each other.

What to skip: ultrasonic cleaners, polishing compounds, abrasive cloths, bleach and household cleaning sprays. None of them are needed, and all of them are harder on a finish than water ever will be.

Done once a week, or after a swim, that is the whole job.

What the Lifetime Guarantee covers

We back every piece with a Lifetime Guarantee. If a piece fades, loses its gold shine, tarnishes or discolors, or breaks because of a quality issue, such as a clasp or a link that fails in normal wear, we send you a replacement free of charge, standard shipping included.

It does not run out. It applies once per item, and it works the same everywhere we ship.

It does not cover loss or theft, regular wear and tear such as scratches and scuffs from daily use, damage from misuse (a chain pulled, cut, crushed or broken on purpose), or boxes and packaging.

To make a claim, message our support team with your order number, which item it is, what happened and a clear photo. Returns of unworn pieces within 30 days are separate and go through the returns portal.

If you are building an everyday rotation, our best sellers are a good place to start, and there are plenty of options in our chains collection if you want a second chain for layering.

Frequently asked questions

Can I shower with gold plated stainless steel jewelry?

Yes. Water and soap do not damage 316L stainless steel or its PVD gold finish. To keep the finish at its best, put on lotion and cologne before your jewelry and wipe the piece dry when you get out.

Does stainless steel jewelry tarnish?

316L stainless steel resists tarnish and rust, and it does not turn your skin green. The plated finish is fade and tarnish resistant. Small scratches and scuffs from daily friction are normal wear, but if the gold finish fades or loses its shine, at any point, our Lifetime Guarantee replaces it.

Can I swim in the pool or the sea with it?

Yes, you can swim with it. Chlorine and salt water are the harshest exposures for any plating, so limit long, repeated soaks, then rinse the piece in fresh water and dry it afterward.

Is stainless steel jewelry good for the gym?

Yes. Sweat does not react with 316L steel. Friction is what wears a finish over time, so tuck a pendant under your shirt during heavy lifts and give the piece a quick rinse after training.
